Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello Families of Room 108!

I am sorry that it has been 3 weeks since my last blog post. Things have been busy!  Conferences are next week, and I look forward to sitting down with each of you to discuss your wonderful children.  You will be getting a conference reminder in today's Friday Folder.  Please double check your calendar. If the date or time no longer works for you, please send me an email so we can find a different time.  Conferences are a great time for us to catch up and for me to get your perspective on how your child's 2nd grade year is going.

Also, there are NO behavior sheets coming home today.  It has been a busy week and I did not get them all filled out.

Fire Safety:
A couple of weeks ago, Emmett's dad, Ryan, came in to share some fire safety tips.  Check out the photos below!

In Science, we are continuing our study of properties of matter. Today, students did an experiment with aluminum, cloth and styrofoam to determine which of these materials was the most insulating and which was the most conductive.

Below are pictures from a couple of weeks ago when students used information about the properties of different materials to design a hat to protect them on a desert island.

And finally, the Portland Water Bureau come to school and presented an assembly on the Bull Run Watershed and how we can work to conserve and protect our water sources.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and I look forward to seeing you at conferences.

Happy Halloween!

Hello Families.

Believe it or not, October 31 was not only Halloween, but the last day of 1st quarter as well!  I can't believe that the year is going so quickly.  Our Nov. 1 planning day will be spent getting ready for conferences.  Conferences will take place on Monday, Nov. 25 and Tuesday, Nov. 26.  I will be sending out reminders a week ahead of time.  In the meantime, you can take a look at the schedule outside the classroom door to sign up, change your time, etc.

Ms. Johnson will be here full time for the three weeks after Thanksgiving.  She will be teaching a math unit and picking up her involvement in the classroom.

Cauliflower Popcorn Recipe
When we were in the garden last week, Ms. Brice gave us a taste of a yummy snack, Cauliflower Popcorn.  Here is the recipe for those who might want to try it at home:

Cauliflower Popcorn!
INGREDIENTS:
● At least ½ large head raw cauliflower (or broccoli, green beans, carrots, or other veg- tastes best with brassicas) cut into small bite-size pieces
● About 1 teaspoon Braggs Liquid Aminos (or soy sauce)
● About 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
INSTRUCTIONS:
Mix all ingredients in a container with a tight-fitting lid.
Close and shake for 2-5 minutes until veggies are well coated- add more seasonings if desired.
Enjoy!

Doubles, Doubles!
In math, we are still practicing our basic math facts to prepare us for the work of larger numbers.  If your student would like to practice the doubles song we learned this week, you can find it here:

Wanted:
We are still in need of 16 ounce water bottles.  If you use bottled water at home, please bring your empty bottles to school for science.  Thank you!
